The trial of Egypt’s former President Hosni Mubarak is due to begin its final day, after six months of hearings. Mr Mubarak denies ordering the killing of protesters during the uprising that forced him to step down last February after three decades in power. He could face the death penalty if convicted, as could former his Interior Minister, Habib al-Adly, and six senior police officers, who are co-defendants. The judge is expected to deliver his verdict at a later hearing. Mr Mubarak’s two sons – one-time heir apparent Gamal and Alaa – are facing separate charges of corruption with their father in the same trial. The business tycoon, Hussein Salem, is also being tried in absentia. All the defendants have denied the charges. Powerful figures The BBC’s Jon Leyne in Cairo says Mr Mubarak’s trial has never really lived up to its opening moment of drama in August, when the 83-year-old was wheeled into court on a stretcher, despite claims that he was too ill to appear. In his closing remarks on Monday, chief prosecutor Mustafa Suleiman said of the trial: “This is not a case about the killing of one or 10 or 20 civilians, but a case of [...]

President Michael Sata has warned youths in Southern Province who intend to protest over the re-alignment of districts that they will be met by Police. And President Sata yesterday said he has never met former president Rupiah Banda to discuss issues related to his prosecution over alleged Corruption that could have been committed during his three year tenure. President Sata made the remarks when he swore in defence deputy minister Colonel Joseph Lungu, Eastern Province minister Charles Banda, high commissioners, ambassadors, Inspector General of Police Stella Libongani, deputy Inspector General of Police Peter Chingaipe, deputy director general of the Anti Corruption Commission Alexander Museba and Western Province Police commissioner Fanwell Siandenge among others. President Sata, who gave a historical background to the creation of most districts and provinces in the country, said his government was realigning districts for easy administration. “When PF came to power, we pronounced two alignments, the creation of Muchinga Province and also Mafinga district. This is the second time Northern Province is being split because when I was a young man, the colonial government had to split Northern Province. It was too big, they had to create Luapula Province,” he explained. “When they created Luapula Province, [...]

THE Patriotic Front (PF) says the case in which it challenged former President Rupiah Banda’s parentage in Court is not over in a development likely to delay his benefits as former head of State. And the PF may petition President Sata over some ministers who have failed to articulate the party manifesto in their course of duty. PF secretary general Wynter Kabimba said in Lusaka yesterday that the party will appeal to the Supreme Court against the judgment delivered in the High Court over Mr Banda’s parentage in the run-up to last year’s general elections. He was speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday. The Lusaka High Court dismissed the petition by the PF to restrain Mr Banda from filing nomination papers for the September 20 Presidential election. Mr Kabimba, who was the PF lawyer in the matter, said the party will appeal against the ruling of the Lusaka High Court because it is not satisfied with the judgment. “We have not discontinued this case. We are still pursuing the matter as it is not a party issue but that of national interest. We do not want to make illegal payments if he is not Zambian. “We want to [...]

State House has refuted the headline story in today’s edition of The Post newspaper alleging that President Sata held a private meeting with former president. The Post Newspaper reports that Mr Banda requested Mr Sata not to send him to jail because he is too old. According to the newspaper this happened after a luncheon hosted in honour of the Chipolopolo Boys last Tuesday. But State House is concerned that the newspaper went as far as basing its editorial comment on a story that has turned out to be untrue. President Sata’s Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations George Chillah said in a statement that the article in question was unfortunate and injurious to the persons accused. State house has since demanded for an appropriate retraction. Mr Chellah says the Head of State has never held any private talks with Mr Banda or anyone to discuss his immunity or matters related to the on-going investigations on corruption against some members of the previous regime. On February 12, 2012, President Sata sent ex-presidents Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda and Mr Banda to join the Republican Vice-President’s delegation that went to cheer the national team during the African Cup of Nations final [...]

THE Patriotic Front (PF) says some of its ministers are failing to articulate the party manifesto to the public and are instead “using common sense or personal opinions”
on matters of national importance. PF secretary general Wynter Kabimba said the party was disappointed that ministers were failing to propound the party manifesto, creating an impression that President Michael Sata was running a “one-man-show Government. ”
Mr Kabimba said at a Press briefing in Lusaka yesterday that the manifesto was the only programme both the PF as a party and the Government could use for social and economic development until its review in 2016 or earlier. “We are, however, disappointed as a party to see that some of our ministers in Government are failing to articulate our party manifesto and hence creating the impression that His Excellency the President is running a one-man show. “I would like to urge all our ministers to use the manifesto as a guide in all their policy pronouncements instead of resorting to common sense or personal opinions as we have seen in some cases,” he said. Mr Kabimba said the party did not want a situation where ministers and party leaders made policy pronouncements that reflected personal [...]

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) Copperbelt provincial chairperson Rebby Chanda’s son, Darlington, has been murdered in South Africa. Mr Chanda, who confirmed the death of his 28-year-old son in an interview on Monday, said the killing happened on Saturday night in Cape Town. “I was informed about his death yesterday (Sunday). I am told he was stabbed with a knife and died instantly,’’ Mr Chanda said. He said his son, who was living in South Africa where he worked as a driver, was stabbed by unknown people as he tried to stop a fight. Mr Chanda, who is currently making arrangements to fly to South Africa to collect his son’s body, said Darlington has left behind a son and that his wife is expecting another child. “We have received information that three suspects in connection with the murder have been arrested while one of them is still on the run,’’ Mr Chanda said. He said Darlington was in the company of his friends at the time of his death. Zambia Daily Mail

The Kenya police cannot arrest Zambian fugitive Henry Banda because the warrant of arrest issued by Zambia’s police has not been authenticated by the Interpol headquarters in Lyon, France. CID boss Ndegwa Muhoro on Tuesday revealed that the warrant of arrest for Mr Banda to face corruption charges had not been published by the international police agency. “In the absence of an authenticated warrant, we cannot do anything, even if they spotted him,” Mr Muhoro said. The Government of Zambia was expected to furnish the Interpol with the physiological characteristics related to the shape of the body, fingerprint, face recognition, DNA, palm print, hand geometry, iris recognition, and odour of the suspect before the arrest is sanctioned. Mr Banda is wanted in Zambia to face corruption charges where he has been linked to a fraudulent deal involving a Cayman Islands-registered company that was paid up to US$12.6 million to evaluate the repossessed Zamtel assets during his father’s rule. By Tuesday, the Interpol had not published the warrant of arrest of Mr Banda. The notice, commonly referred to as the Red Notice, helps the concerned authorities locate and arrest suspects, and once issued, it will significantly restrict Mr Banda’s ability to [...]

Rupiah Banda has pleaded with President Michael Sata not to send him to jail but instead forgive him over allegations of corruption. Well-placed sources disclosed yesterday that former president Banda made the plea during a private meeting last Tuesday with President Sata and a few ministers after a luncheon which was hosted for the Zambia national soccer team following their AFCON victory in Gabon. “Mr Rupiah pleaded with the President not to send him to jail. He said ‘you are my brother and we come a long way, please do anything but please don’t send me to jail. I am too old to go to prison. My family will suffer. Already we are stressed with these investigations’,” said the source. Among those who attended the meeting were defence minister Geoffrey Mwamba and home affairs minister Kennedy Sakeni and his deputy Obvious Mwaliteta. The source said President Sata remained mute on Banda’s plea and only said “it’s up to the Zambian people to make that decision”. Last year, President Sata instructed law enforcement agencies to probe the US$ 1 million (about K5 billion) held in Rupiah Banda’s Mphundu Trust Account linked to the construction of posh flats in Kabulonga. Recently, Banda [...]

President Michael Sata took the fight against gender-based violence (GBV), including rape of minors, a notch up yesterday when he became the first President in years to personally condemn a man that raped and smothered a 12-year-old Chibombo girl. President Sata was joined by his wife, First Lady Dr Christine Kaseba, who took time off her busy schedule to travel to Chibombo and join the grieving family as the girl we cannot name because she is a minor was buried. In a statement released by his special assistant for press and public relations George Chellah, the head of State said he is devastated to learn of the young girl’s horrifying demise. “I am devastated to learn that a child aged 12 lost her life under very wicked and horrifying circumstances. A family has lost an innocent young soul and there is no expression that can capture the degree of the calamity that has befallen the surviving family members,” President Sata said in his message of condolences to the minor’s family. “It is truly regrettable that such a wicked thing occurred.
Ruling Patriotic Front Chairperson for Local government and Housing Given Lubinda has dismissed reports linking him to individuals jostling for the party Presidency in 2016 if President Michael Sata rules out the possibility of seeking re-election. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Qfm, Mr. Lubinda trashed the assertions stating that he will remain committed to serving Kabwata residents. Mr. Lubinda who is also Foreign Affairs and tourism minister explained that such speculations lack merit. He said he has no intentions of challenging for the party presidency stating that his loyalty is to the people in his constituency. An online publication has singled out Defence Minister Geoffrey Mwamba, popularly known as GBM, PF Secretary General Winter Kabimba, and Foreign Affairs Minister Given Lubinda as those eying the PF presidency following President Sata’s indication that he might not go re-election in 2016. Meanwhile, Mr. Lubinda has reiterated his government’s commitment to creating employment for the majority youths in the country. He has since urged the youths in the country to take advantage of the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) which he says is creating employment opportunities in various skills for the young people.
