The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) says the leaving out of the controversial Barotseland Agreement issue in the first draft constitution by the technical committee erodes people’s confidence in the Patriotic Front government’s commitment to bring the matter to rest. EFZ Executive Director Pukuta Mwanza says the move is contrary to the assurances made by government to deal with the matter through the constitution making process. Reverend Mwanza says the Barotseland agreement is a national matter of high concern to the general public which requires an amicable solution. He explains to QFM News that the matter should have been included in the draft constitution to allow Zambians deliberate and decide on the way forward. He has since backed calls to have the agreement settled through the constitution making process stating that the issue is constitutional and can only be settled through the constitution.
Ruling in the matter where two suspended high Court judges have been granted an injunction to commence judicial review proceedings, has been set for May 24. High Court Judges Nigel Mutuna and Charles Kajimanga are contesting the setting up of the tribunal by the republican president to probe their alleged misconduct . judge Flugence Chisanga has set the date for ruling after receiving oral submissions from lawyers representing the two judges. And Solicitor General Musa Mwenye has confirmed to Journalists outside the high Court grounds that ruling in the matter has been reserved to a later date. Mr. Mwenye says the state cannot at this juncture say anything on the matter before the ruling. On Thursday, Mr. Mwenye who is representing the Attorney General Chambers asked the Lusaka High Court to set aside the stay to commence judicial review proceedings granted to the two suspended judges. Mr. Mwenye submitted that High Court Judges Nigel Mutuna and Charles Kajimanga have gone to court prematurely, contrary to the provisions of the constitution. He has argued that the judicial code of conduct is subsidiary to the provisions of article 98 of the constitution and cannot be used to deter the republican president’s power [...]

Rangers at Marongora Field Station in Mashonaland West Province shot and killed a suspected Zambian national following heavy exchange of gunfire leading to the recovery of at least six elephant tusks in the Hurungwe Safari Area. Preliminary indications based on an identity card found on the scene show that one of the men carried a United National Independence Party identity card bearing the name Peter Kakwenya and National Registration number 383158/11/1 believed to be from Zambia. It could not be established at the time of writing if the identity card belonged to the deceased or one of the men who escaped. Four of the deceased’s accomplices escaped when rangers who were on an operation to monitor hunting activities in the Hurungwe Safari Area made a follow-up after hearing three gunshots. Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabweazara confirmed the incident, adding that investigations were still in progress. “Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority rangers deployed to monitor hunting activities in the Hurungwe Safari Area heard three gunshots which they followed up leading to an encounter with five suspected poachers,” he said. During the patrol, the rangers picked up a spoor which they trailed until they had an encounter with [...]

President Joyce Banda has said Malawi will overturn its ban on homosexual acts – the first African country to do so since 1994. Two Malawian men were sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2010 after saying they were getting married. Several Western leaders have recently said they would cut aid to countries which did not recognise gay rights. Mrs Banda took power last month after her predecessor, Bingu wa Mutharika, died of a heart attack. She has since reversed several of his policies, including devaluing the currency, in a bid to get donor funding restored. Many donors cut aid under Mr Mutharika, accusing him of economic mismanagement and political repression. After a storm of international condemnation, he did pardon the two Malawian men on “humanitarian grounds only” but said they had “committed a crime against our culture, against our religion, and against our laws”. Homosexual acts are illegal in most African countries. In Uganda, an MP recently introduced a bill which stipulated the death penalty could be imposed for some homosexual offences, although he has since said he now wants this changed to life in prison. In a speech to parliament, which was broadcast live on national radio, Mrs [...]

Q: The oil light on my 2000 Chevy Cavalier comes on at low rpm and then shuts off as I start driving. I checked the oil level and it’s fine. Is this something I should be worried about? A: Any time the oil light goes on, it’s cause for concern. Many newer and high-feature cars have oil-life monitors that determine when the oil needs to be changed, but the glowing red oil light in your Cavalier indicates the oil pressure is low. That’s bad for several reasons. Low pressure means there either isn’t enough oil in the system or the oil pump isn’t circulating enough oil to keep the critical bearing and friction surfaces lubricated. If the light comes on while at speed, do your best to pull off the road quickly, turn the engine off, and investigate the problem to avoid damage. Oil is the lifeblood of any engine, but the oil circuit is probably the least appreciated engine system. The oil-supply path starts in the oil pan, where a pump sucks up the lubricating fluid and distributes it to passages cast into the block. From there oil is directed to the crankshaft bearings, the camshaft bearings, the valve [...]

National soccer team Herve Renard today unveiled his 26 man ‘crack squad’ that will go into camp ahead of the June World Cup qualifiers against Sudan on 2nd June and Ghana on 9th June, 2012. Renard has kept faith in the bulk of the team that minted gold at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea but has brought in new blood in every department. Red Arrows goal minder Danny Munyao has come in at the expense of Joshua Titima in the goal keeping department. Munyao is a member of the delightful U20 class of 2007 which participated at the FIFA world cup. In defence, Zimbabwe based young Aaron Katebe has impressed the coach in training and in the practice match against Angola in which he played 90 minutes. Emmanuel Mbola also returns from a FIFA suspension and his presence at left back will be more than welcome especially with veteran Joseph Musonda not having seen much game time since the final match of the AFCON in which he sustained an injury. In midfield, Power Dynamos captain who impressed in yesterdays match in Angola has deservedly gotten a nod to join the elite in training. Versatile midfielder [...]

In a dramatic turn of events, incarcerated business executive, Mathew Mohan has come out claiming that suspended Supreme Court judge, Phillip Musonda, visited him at Prison to coerce him not to testify against him if called as a witness before the tribunal set up to probe the conduct of three judges. President Michael Sata suspended Supreme Court Judge Musonda together with High Court judges, Charles Kajimanga and Nigel Mutuna and set up a tribunal to investigate their conduct. media reports last week stated that Mr Justice Musonda had, three days after his suspension, visited Mohan at Chimbokaila Prison where the latter was currently serving a two-and-half-year sentence for theft. But Justice Minister Sebastian Zulu, in a letter to the President, which was published by the Times on Saturday 12th May 2012, said Mr Justice Musonda had visited him at his office on May 9 this year where he denied having visited Mohan. The judge also lodged a complaint that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mutembo Nchito had conspired with the Zambia Security Intelligence Services (ZSIS) to fabricate evidence against him to destroy him. Mr Justice Musonda claimed he did not even know Mohan. But Mohan alleged yesterday at the [...]

PRESIDENT Michael Sata says opposition political parties in the country are speaking for the corrupt rich. And President Sata says there is too much corruption in the councils. Speaking at State House yesterday when he swore in Ministry of Lands permanent secretary Daisy Ng’ambi, her counterpart for Luapula Province Anna Mubanga and Zambia’s Ambassador to France Solomon Mbuzi, President Sata said politicians were supposed to speak for the poor. “I cannot see a political party calling itself worth representing the poor people that goes and defends corruption. We as politicians, we are supposed to speak for the poor people but these opposition parties politicians are speaking for the corrupt rich people, it’s most unfortunate,” President Sata said in apparent reference to the opposition that went to meet diplomats over the three suspended judges. President Sata told Mbuzi that his interest in France should be what was good for Zambia. He said Mbuzi should not worry about the internal politics of the French people. “As an African, they won’t come to you but as Africans here you find that nashala neka political parties are going to these foreigners thinking they can assist. Dr. Mutesa has told Qfm news in an interview that the current state of public hospitals in the country does not give hope that Zambia will meet its health MDGs with 2 years left before the deadline. He has therefore urged government to prioritize quality health care through increased budgetary allocations. The opposition party leader adds that most of the health infrastructure across the country remains dilapidated and that government should heed to the concerns raised by various stakeholders. He has called for accountability in the manner funds are handled in the health sector. [QFM]
