Police in Lusaka have launched investigations into former president Rupiah Banda’s alleged purchase of two luxury Lexus motor vehicles at a cost of K3.6 billion.
Police spokesperson Ndandula Siamana said in Lusaka yesterday that investigations into the matter had started.
Ms Siamana said the public would be informed about the outcome of the probe as soon as it was concluded.
“I can confirm that investigations are underway and once they have been concluded we will let the people know,” Ms Siamana said.
On Tuesday, President Michael Sata questioned the logic by his predecessor to buy the two luxury vehicles at K3.6 billion when there were many pressing national needs.
Mr Sata expressed disappointment at the expenditure on the two luxury vehicles and wondered what they were for.
Meanwhile, Ms Siamana and outgoing Lusaka Province Police Chief Mhlakeni Zulu said the probe into campaign motor vehicles allegedly bought by the MMD using public resources for campaigns in the September 20 elections have reached an advanced stage.
“We are still getting some more information from the ground. The information we have so far is that some vehicles are still hidden and each time we follow up, they are moved and hidden elsewhere. However, we have intensified our search for the said vehicles,” Mr Zulu said.
He said the search would continue until all the vehicles in question were recovered.
And Ms Siamana said the police have confiscated 37 more bicycles from the MMD on the Copperbelt allegedly bought using public resources.
She said the bicycles were seized in Mufulira and investigations were still going on.
She also said the police were awaiting documents from former Finance minister Situmbeko Musokotwane over the 1,230 bicycles found at his house.
Ms Siamana said Dr Musokotwane had not yet submitted documents to the police to justify that the purchase of the bicycles found at his private residence in Makeni in Lusaka were bought using private resources.
And Mr Zulu said that if Dr Musokotwane, who was warned and cautioned by police last Friday, failed to avail documents for the bicycles, the case would be handed over to the courts of law.
Meanwhile, a Ndola-based Church leader has appealed to the Patriotic Front Government to ensure that the MMD administration is held accountable for its deeds while in office, reports ZANIS.
