Zamtel launches pre-paid roaming services in Egypt

July 26, 2011

Zamtel has launched its first pre-paid roaming services in Egypt on a bilateralbasis in partnership with Etisalat.

Zamtel Chief Commercial Officer Amon Jere announced in a statement yesterday that the new service is in addition to the already existing post-paid roaming partnership that Zamtel has with Etisalat.

Mr Jere said the new service is mutually beneficial to the economies of both countries.

“As you are aware, both Egypt and Zambia are members of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, COMESA. Therefore providing pre-paid roaming will enhance trade between our cross-border traders as communication constraints are now a thing of the past.

“It is also our firm belief that Egypt has become a transit hub to Europe and the Arabia and as such it will also be easy for people travelling via Egypt to communicate with their family and friends back home on their way outside Africa,” Mr Jere said.

He stressed that the successful launch of the pre-paid roaming service in Egypt would be followed by a domino effect as other pre-paid destination will soon be available.

Though this is its first pre-paid roaming destination, Zamtel has several post-paid roaming destinations including the entire Southern African region.

“In fact in some countries like Namibia, Swaziland, Angola, Botswana, South Africa and many more we have two roaming partners to ensure uninterrupted and affordable communication”, he added.

Mr Jere said Zamtel adopted a systematic approach in launching its products and services.

Since October last year, the company has scored a number of successes including replacement of the old analogue system with the more intelligent Next Generation Network (NGN).

In the same period the GSM arm of the business has grown by 40 per cent while the broadband arm has grown by over 100 per cent.
